Take a trip to Portugal with us and see how PELCOR creates these beautiful products from the cork bark of the evergreen oak tree. The finest cork comes from Portugal and Spain, where cork is a major industry. The countryside is full of "cork farms". Cork is always present in our daily lives, in our flooring, in the corks that protect our wines, etc. But, cork can assume another more refined form, that isn't as widely known, through its skin, which is made from the finest areas of the cork-bark. |

More About Cork![]() Transformed from the rustic cork-oak of the bark into a soft and supple product, cork bark has properties that make it an excellent source of material for many products. It is now one of the featured "green" products for fashion, home and business accessories. Due to the hot dry climate in Portugal, the cork bark of this unique evergreen oak grows thick to protect the tree. On a mature tree the cork bark reaches a thickness of 1.5" to 2". The bark insulates the tree from heat, loss of moisture, cold and fire. | |
The first stripping of the bark occurs when the tree is about 15 years old. Additional strippings occur every 8 to 10 years. It takes approximately 15 strippings before the oak tree can no longer produce this top quality cork-bark. Instead of cutting down a tree, a number of products traditionally designed using wood can now have cork-bark as their construction material. Thus, the tree can live for 100 years more while still allowing us the privilege of using its bark for our pleasure! Our large and small tea and jewelry chests are two examples of wood replacement items. |
